Prysmian OptiC@t™5e Hybrid Fibre/Cat5e Cable

The Prysmian OptiC@t™5e Hybrid Fibre/Cat5e Cable combines copper networking capability with optical fibre in a single cable, providing a practical solution for installations that need both existing LAN connectivity and fibre capability. Prysmian describes OptiC@t™5e as a combination of four pairs of Cat5e copper cable and two bend-insensitive optical fibres under a common Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) sheath.

The hybrid design helps provide a future-ready communications infrastructure by combining copper and fibre technologies in one cable. Prysmian specifically developed OptiC@t5e for the New Zealand market and describes applications including new housing developments, home renovations, commercial fit-outs and residential refits.

The optical component uses BendBrightXS™ bend-insensitive fibre, with the fibres complying with ITU-T G.657.A2. This technology is designed to tolerate tight bends and compact installation areas, making the cable suitable where installation space is limited.

The copper section contains four twisted pairs using 0.50mm bare annealed copper conductors with PE insulation. The optical section incorporates LSZH-buffered fibres, an aramid yarn strength member and a blue LSZH sheath, while the overall cable has a pebble-white LSZH outer sheath.

Prysmian’s published technical information specifies a nominal 6.1mm cable diameter, approximately 40kg/km weight, and a minimum bending radius of 10 times the cable diameter without tension. The published operating temperature range is -30°C to +70°C.

OptiC@t™5e is particularly suited to communications infrastructure where installers want to combine copper LAN connectivity with fibre capability in a single cable.
